The Riddles 2-6-0 will be on hire to the NVR from mid-October to mid-January next year, courtesy of the Loughborough Standard Locomotive Group and the Great Central Railway.

It is understood that the ‘Mogul’ will be sharing Santa Special duties with NVR resident ‘Battle of Britain’ No. 34081 92 Squadron and will also be available for driver experience courses.

No. 78018 is the sixth locomotive to have visited the Wansford-Peterborough line this year, following rebuilt ‘Battle of Britain’ No. 34053 Sir Keith Park, new-build ‘A1’ No. 60163 Tornado, No. 46100 Royal Scot, ‘14XX’ No. 1450 and, next month, ‘A4’ No. 60009 Union of South Africa for the NVR’s ‘Pacifics’ event on September 16/17.

The star of Snowdrift at Bleath Gill previously visited the seven-mile railway during the winter last year, months after it was restored to working order on August 17 2016.

It will also be attending the Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon’s ‘Autumn Steam Gala’ on September 16/17. There it will line up alongside ‘A3’ No. 60103 Flying Scotsman and Furness Railway 0-4-0 No. 20, the oldest operational standard gauge locomotive in Britain.

Dates for No. 78018’s driver experience courses on the NVR are expected to be announced shortly. For more information, visit www.nvr.org.uk.
