SAINT ON TOUR

Saint on Tour

by Steam Railway |

This month marks the 60th anniversary of the last steam locomotive built for British Railways – Evening Star – so this edition of Steam Railway explores the history of this historic engine.

But what about No. 92220’s equivalents in other countries? Railway historian Phil Atkins rounds up other ‘last built’ locomotives from around the world, including many which predate the Riddles ‘9F’ by several decades.

Elsewhere, Toby Jennings tells the full story of Taff Vale Railway ‘O1’ No. 28 and the plans for its long-awaited return to steam, plus how this uniquely Welsh locomotive forms part of the Gwili Railway’s Welsh Train project. Sticking with Wales, Thomas Bright looks at the smaller end of the spectrum and the Ffestiniog Railway’s ambitious Boston Lodge redevelopment scheme and the plans to protect the works’ historic fabric.

As always, we bring you the very latest news, comment and analysis from the world of steam preservation, including:

· ‘Saint’ set for North Yorkshire Moors and Severn Valley Railway galas

· Industry reacts to DEFRA’s new solid fuel regulations

· Morayshire returned to Bo’ness amid Llangollen’s financial problems

· S&D Trust told to quit Washford
