The latest ‘Merchant Navy’ to be returned to steam, No. 35006 Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co., was officially named at an unveiling ceremony at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway on May 16.
GWSR President Pete Waterman revealed the Bulleid ‘Pacific’s distinctive nameplates while David Brown, believed to be the last fireman to fire No. 35006 before it was withdrawn, addressed the crowd.
The ‘Merchant Navy’ 4-6-2, the fourth of its class to return to steam, arrived at the railway in 1983 and made its first moves under its own power in August last year.
Following successful loaded test runs over the Cheltenham Racecourse-Toddington route on May 4/5, Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co. will makes its public debut at the GWSR’s Cotswold Festival of Steam gala on May 28-30.
