The Bluebell Railway plc has taken the major step of purchasing a Southern Railway parcels van - specifically to assist in the filming contracts for which the line is regularly used.
Previously, a ‘Queen Mary’ brake van has been used to carry a generator when production crews are shooting scenes on a moving train - but the new ‘Van C’, No. 404, will provide a much more authentic appearance when marshalled in a passenger set.
Previously owned by the Southern Coach Preservation Group, the van has recently been stored out of use at the Bluebell, but is now to receive a priority cosmetic restoration. It will again be painted in SR green, although the orange markings visible in the accompanying picture - which denoted the original provision of a stove - will be omitted.
