Arguably the highest-profile new-build project in Britain has reached a significant milestone, with the trial-fitting of the smokebox of ‘P2’ No. 2007 Prince of Wales at the P2 Steam Locomotive Trust’s works at Darlington.
The semi-streamlined smokebox, complete with distinctive D-shaped door, as well as the superheater access cover, was put into position for the benefit of the Gresley Society Trust, who held their summer meeting at the P2SLT’s Hopetown Works in Darlington.
The fitting of the smokebox is only temporary, and won’t be able to take place until Prince of Wales has its middle cylinder fitted. Similarly, the fitting of the V-fronted cab to the ‘Mikado’s’ frames is also temporary, as the Trust ensures the structure is within the loading gauge. Any adjustments to the height of the cab will need to be made before the cab is fitted permanently.
