The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has welcomed back into traffic Thompson ‘B1’ No. 61264. The locomotive’s first test run, in which it piloted ‘Black Five’ No. 44806, itself only recently returned to traffic, took place on Saturday July 30. The Thompson 4-6-0 was back in revenue earning service on the following Monday, August 1.
As reported in SR456, No. 61264, which is one of two surviving ‘B1s’, was withdrawn from traffic on the NYMR in late 2014 for routine winter maintenance. Cracks were discovered in the locomotive’s driving wheelsets which were sent to Ian Riley’s workshop in Bury for repair. They were returned to Grosmont on June 22.
No. 61264’s return to steam brings the NYMR’s operational fleet up to six, shortly to be seven with the imminent completion of BR Standard ‘4MT’ 2-6-4T No. 80136’s overhaul.
