Tickets are now on sale for new-build ‘A1’ No. 60163 Tornado’s forthcoming visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in March next year.
The Peppercorn 4-6-2 will be running on the NYMR on March 3-11 (excluding March 9), and follows in the footsteps of Stanier ‘7P’ No. 46100 Royal Scot and ‘A3’ No. 60103 Flying Scotsman in opening the railway’s operating season.
NYMR General Manager, Chris Price, said: “We’re very excited about the arrival of the iconic locomotive and are sure it will delight visitors travelling up and down our line.
“Over the years we’ve had many guest locomotives visit us and we expect Tornado to be one of the best yet. With its searing speed and fantastic recent history, it’s sure to be a head turner!”
Weekend fares are £35 for adults and £17.50 for children, reducing to £33 and £16.50 respectively for mid-week journeys and groups (20+). For further information, telephone the railway on 01751 472508, or email Customer Services via email@example.com.
Visiting big name locomotives have become the norm for the NYMR’s season-opening events, replacing the traditional Spring gala.
Flying Scotsman generated £1.5 million in gross income for the railway when it graced the line in 2016, and while Royal Scot didn’t enjoy quite the same success as the ‘A3’, it “still netted a considerable profit,” said Mr Price at the time (SR466).
It is understood that No. 60163 will not be paired with the railway’s recently repaired LNER teak set; instead the ‘A1’ will run with a Mk 1 rake.
Tornado services will depart from Grosmont at 9.30am, 12.40pm and 3.40pm on March 3/4 and 10/11, with only the 9.30am and 12.40pm services departing Grosmont on March 6-8. Tickets must be purchased in advance and dogs (except assistance dogs) will not be permitted on the Tornado services.
